Memorial day. Veterans Day. American Soldiers Saluting. US Army. Military of USA . empty space for text

July has a particular resonance for the veterans in our Edmonds and Renton communities. The month that contains Independence Day is, for many of the men and women who served, a time when the connection between military service and the freedoms that service protected is felt most directly. At Scott A. Babin, DDS & Associates, we take that connection seriously — and we want every eligible veteran in the Seattle metro area to know about a benefit that thousands of veterans are not currently using.

Through the VA Community Care Program, qualifying veterans can receive dental care at our Edmonds and Renton offices at no cost to them, through a referral from the VA. Dr. Scott Babin and our team accept VA Community Care referrals specifically because we believe that access to high-quality dental care should not be a barrier for the people who served this country — and because the program makes it possible to deliver that care in the kind of comfortable, patient-centered environment that every veteran deserves.

What the VA Community Care Dental Program Is

The VA Community Care Program allows the VA to authorize veterans to receive care from non-VA providers in their community when VA facilities cannot provide the needed service in a timely manner, when a veteran lives too far from a VA facility, or when community care is in the veteran’s best medical interest. For dental care specifically, VA Community Care referrals allow eligible veterans to receive comprehensive dental treatment — from routine cleanings and examinations to restorative procedures and more complex care — from private dental practices like ours that have enrolled in the program.

This program is distinct from standard VA dental eligibility, which is limited to veterans who meet specific service-related criteria. Community Care referrals can extend the reach of dental benefits to a broader population of veterans based on their individual circumstances and needs. The best way to determine whether you or a veteran in your family qualifies for a Community Care dental referral is to contact the VA and inquire directly about your eligibility and the referral process.

What Veterans Experience at Our Practice

The approach that defines Scott A. Babin, DDS & Associates — the same approach that has built our practice’s reputation among Edmonds and Renton families over more than two decades — is the approach every veteran who comes through our doors receives. Dr. Babin graduated from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry and has been serving the Seattle metro area since 2003, staying at the forefront of dental technology and technique through continuous continuing education. Dr. Kelsey Christensen brings her own exceptional credentials to the practice alongside Dr. Babin.

Our team takes particular care with patients who may not have had consistent dental care for an extended period — a situation that is not uncommon among veterans who have prioritized other health needs, who have managed dental anxiety that made routine care difficult to maintain, or who have faced access barriers that the VA referral program is specifically designed to address. We approach every patient’s situation without judgment and with a focus on where to go from here, not on what should have happened differently in the past.

Our CEREC technology means dental crowns can be fabricated and placed in a single visit rather than requiring multiple appointments — a practical advantage for patients who may need restorative work and want to minimize the number of appointments required. Our sedation options address the anxiety that makes dental care genuinely difficult for some patients, including veterans who carry stress responses that affect how they experience clinical environments. And our team takes the time to know the person in the chair, not just the dental chart.

What a VA-Referred Dental Appointment at Our Practice Covers

When a veteran arrives at Scott A. Babin, DDS & Associates with a VA Community Care referral, the scope of services available is determined by the authorization provided by the VA — which typically outlines the specific dental services being authorized. Within that scope, veterans receive the same quality of care, the same technology, and the same personal attention that every patient at our practice receives.

Common services provided through VA Community Care dental referrals include comprehensive oral examinations, dental X-rays, professional cleanings, fillings, extractions, and in some cases more extensive restorative or surgical procedures depending on the authorization. Veterans who haven’t had consistent dental care for an extended period often benefit from a thorough examination that establishes a clear picture of current oral health and identifies what needs attention most urgently.

Our Edmonds and Renton locations are both fully equipped with CEREC technology, digital X-rays, and laser dentistry tools that allow us to provide efficient, high-quality care across the full range of services. Veterans who also struggle with dental anxiety will find that our practice’s specific focus on anxiety management — including sedation options and a team trained to work at a patient’s pace — makes the experience significantly more manageable than they may expect.

July Is the Month to Make the Call

We understand that navigating the VA system can feel complex, and that the process of obtaining a Community Care referral requires initiative and follow-through that isn’t always easy. But the effort is worth making — and we encourage every veteran in the Edmonds, Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, Renton, and surrounding South King County communities who may be eligible to contact the VA and ask about Community Care dental benefits.

If you receive a referral and are ready to schedule at our practice, our team will walk you through everything you need to bring and what to expect at your first appointment. We handle the administrative coordination directly and work to make the process as smooth as possible for every veteran patient.

This July — the month that begins with our collective acknowledgment of what service members have given — is the right time to make that call.

Dr Babin and his entire staff are absolutely fantastic. It took my wife and I a while to find a dentist that we liked and trusted. I have recommend them to my friends and family and know he will take good care of all my loved ones.
